Don Baldwin BYLAWS AND MINUTES No bylaw
changes were made this year. Last
years minutes were unanimously approved with a resounding piratical ?ARRRGH!' FINANCES 2008
Net (+ $415.16) There
was $4,275.46 in the bank account on 1/1/08 (as noted in last year's minutes),
and there was $4,690.62 as of 12/31/08, representing a net gain of $415.16.
Income
(+ $1,755.00) Dues
continue to be the primary source of club income, at $1,215.00. Race
fees are still our major secondary source, at $480.00. A small
amount of additional income came from little stuff like burgee and hat sales, at
$60.00. Expenses
(- $1,339.84) Happily,
our primary costs were (as usual) in support of partying, at $677.99. The cost
of race supplies, forest service fees, and race awards supported the excellent
cause of racing, at $351.86. A
reasonable expense to help create a new generation of sailors came in the form of contributions to
Community Sailing, of $210.00. A small
annual expense for our website fee totaled $99.99. Terry reminds us to encourage new
membership; the more the merrier! RACING Spring Series, Summer Series, and Manifest Destiny
Race There will be a Spring Series, Summer Series, and
Manifest Destiny Race. The Spring
Series and Summer Series will each have 3 days of racing (with 2 races per
day), and 1 throw out race for each series.
Dates for the races will be announced later. The Forest Service has requested that we not race on Labor Day. Race Committee Volunteers: Peer
Bjornstad volunteered for two races (July and August) in the summer series David

Can Races There
was some debate regarding the Beer Can races, which were not well attended last
year. One suggestion of a 5pm Friday
start was followed by others' observations that front-range people can't get
there so early, and that people are tired by then and don't want to start that
late. Sid suggested a mid-day (1 or 1pm) start on weekends when another race
isn't scheduled. At Jeff's
recommendation, Jack moved that the races be abolished as they currently exist,
until the Race Chairman can decide whether and how to hold them. That motion was generally approved. Rulebook The
Sailing Association of Intermountain Lakes (SAIL) provides a rulebook to member
clubs (annual $60 dues), sells them to nonmembers for $26, and sells them to
individual members for a discounted amount.
(http://www.rmsail.org) A series of motions and discussion resulted
in the decision that (1) the officers of the club will investigate obtaining
membership in the association, which deserves local support from clubs such as
ours, and (2) depending on what the officers decide, LGYC will obtain a
rulebook either by becoming a member organization, or by purchasing a copy
through Terry Pratt, who is an individual member of that association. LAKE AND MARINA REPORT Jack
Bakken let us know that the lake level was still way down, warning, There's
not anywhere near the snow surrounding the lake that's been present in past
years, but Peer indicated the basin as a whole is at 108% of normal. Note that graphs showing the lake's current
level and its level through the past years is available on the LGYC
website. (Select the ?About Lake
Granby' link on our homepage: http://www.lakegranbyyachtclub.com) Jack
also noted, interestingly, that years ago the original use profile of the
lake's water was divided 90% agricultural versus 10% domestic, but those
figures are now reversed. Jack
also reported that Zebra mussels have been found in Williams Fork and Wolfer ?
they are suspected to be present in Granby, but our lake has been considered
too cold for them to breed. (Let's hope
that turns out to be accurate ?) The
Grand Elk Marina (Mike is the manager) has passed word to us that rumors of
foreclosure are not true. Grand Elk,
Shore Fox, and Horn Ranch share ownership; everything is fine with Grand Elk,
though Shorefox is in foreclosure.
Grand Elk is expected to remain in business for the foreseeable future,
and certainly throughout this summer. COMMUNITY SAILING Steve
Frank, head of Community Sailing, was very welcome in joining us again this
year. (www.communitysailing.org) Community
Sailing has done a lot of good work since its inception in 1995; its sailing
programs for young people at Standley Lake and Cherry Creek Reservoir have
taught somewhere in the neighborhood of 4000 young people to sail, so far. They had only 6 or 7 boats when Sid and
Steve first met; they now have 70 boats, 8 instructors, and in their 14th
season last summer they had 375 kids (28 of whom were on scholarship). Community Sailing has now started working
1-day programs for special needs kids. If we're
lucky, some of those kids may find their way to Lake Granby and join the club
when they're sailing as adults. After
the meeting, individuals made donations and the Club made a matching donation
of $200.00, which goes to the Lake Granby Yacht Club TS Smith Endowment
Fund. (This fund was started by the
Yacht Club for Community Sailing in 2004; the Club voted to authorize making a
donation to match individual donations, up to $250.00 this year.) SPECIAL THANKS AND HONORS Please
take time to thank the folks in the club who, year after year, have made their
homes available to us for all our parties and socializing we wouldn't have
anything LIKE the wonderful times we've had together, but for them. So, special thanks this year to Kathy and
Dave Jensen for letting us all mingle at their home on the lake so many times,
and to Jan and Dick Scheurer for providing a cozy and beautiful early spring
forum for the Hardwater yet again. Jeff
Davidson was thanked for his outstanding service as our Commodore, with the
traditional Past Commodore's flag, a book, and the whole group's sincerest
gratitude. Jeff, thank you so much Ruth
noted, to everyone's general acclamation, that Terry is the Elmer's Glue of
the club, in serving so reliably and capably as Treasurer. Thanks, Terry! It
should be noted that Jeff Davidson has been an absolute rock for us, holding
the race series' together and taking on such a big organizational task. Hmmm maybe we should say, 'our anchor'
instead of 'a rock', eh? ;) Jeff, we truly appreciate all the work
you've gone to. Sid and
Ruth Brugger were honored with a gift of the retired Manifest Destiny Regatta
plaque (on which their names appear so many times), with special recognition of
the fact that they are the last remaining charter members of the Lake Granby
Yacht Club (the original group in 1977 included them, Ted Smith, T.S. &
Annie Smith, Hoppy Gross, Bruce Matthews, and Woody Anderson).
