The Commodore's Corner

The 2002 Hardwater Regatta was held on March 9, 2002, at the Jensen's home on Lake Granby. The event was well attended despite the fact that it had to be postponed for one week because of adverse weather conditions. A good time was had by all with lots of good food. The following persons were elected as officers of the 2002 season:
Commodore - Dick Scheurer
Vice Commodore - Karen Baldwin
Treasurer - Mike LaPorte
Secretary - Don Baldwin

A special memorial tribute was
held on the Jensen's deck for past
Commodore Chris Poole,
culminating appropriately with a
potato gun salute. Chris will be
missed by those of us who shared
many enjoyable raft ups and other
good times with the Pooles.

Jack Bakken reports that in discussions with Bill Dunkelberger, Ranger for the Arapahoe Forest Recreation Area, and Craig Magwire, Chief Ranger, it was learned that the lake is currently 54' below capacity. It is anticipated that the most that can be expected is that the water level will come up 25' at the high point of the season.
The forest service indicates that it is likely the Stillwater ramp will not be available for launching boats; however, they have laid down some aircraft matting at Sunset Beach which will allow deep enough water for successful launchings. They further stated that they will be putting in a
courtesy dock at Sunset Beach which should facilitate launching.
Obviously we will not have the benefit of the gin pole this year if we are unable to launch at Stillwater. However, Sid Brugger, Jack Bakken and other long time sailors, indicate that there still should be ample water for a great sailing season. It is recommended that members consider getting a copy of the lake bottom map. We are told they are available at Rocky Mountain Boat Works and several sporting stores in the Grand Lake/Granby area.
The ice went out this year on
the April 19th, an all-time early
record
