LAKE GRANBY YACHT CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING

APRIL 2, 2005

MINUTES

Treasurer's Report

Paul Lewis began the meeting with a call for the Treasurer's report from Terry Pratt.  Terry reported that we spent roughly $1,000 (?) more than we took in as revenue last year (although that counts the $1,000 donation to Community Sail of Colorado

that was actually covered by 2003 revenue).   The other highlights of the Treasurer's Report were <...primary expenses / total revenue? ...>.  Terry also encouraged members to kindly continue donating use of their homes for the club events.

Continuing Contribution to Community Sail

A discussion of how best to continue the Club's social service in the form of an annual contribution brought ideas from the floor.  Joan Grant suggested 'passing the hat' at each annual meeting.  This was welcomed as a good idea, and extended by Jeff Davidson, who moved that we include everyone (not just those at the annual meeting) by adding a line item on the annual membership form to provide an additional amount for donation to Community Sail.  The motion was carried.  The general feeling was that the additional line item should perhaps not specify an amount, in order to allow people to specify more than just a minimum, but Paul Lewis and Terry Pratt will work out how best to encourage such contributions via the form.

Encouraging New Membership

Pursuant to that discussion, Paul noted that as a club we should each be encouraging new members to join among those on the lake.  Suggestions included:

- Delivering a flyer to every boat in each marina,

- Each member taking time to get to know at least one other couple on their dock, and inviting them to join us at the Spring  Barbeque

- Offering a 1st race FREE to all non-members (especially but not limited to the Spring BBQ)

- Club members acquiring and making a point of flying their LGYC Club burgees, in order to establish a visible 'presence' on the lake

- Club members wearing their club shirts and sweatshirts to skippers' meetings,/races, again to encourage a visible identity as a club to onlookers,

- Offering a 'starter kit' to new members that includes 2 club t-shirts, a waterproofed club roster, a club burgee, a calendar of the upcoming year's social events, and the past year's issues of the LGYC newsletter

New Gin Pole

Jack Bakken has arranged with Dan Matthews of the Forest Service for the Forest Service to spend some of the fees we all pay on putting in another gin pole at Sunset Point!  It will be located between the median and the upper parking lot, with specific placement determined with the help of club members who have surveyed the site.  The county will grade the surface of the gin pole area, and Mountain Parks Electric will provide the pole itself, and place it for us.  The LGYC need only provide the hardware (hook, line, winch) and install it on the pole.  We will continue using John Bright's design as was used at Stillwater.   Many thanks to the club members who created this coalition!

Extended Ramp

As many of you know, the Forest Service has put in a new concrete block ramp at Sunset; but they've also extended the old one 125' or so further out than it used to be, down to where the water level was at the end of last summer.

Race Report

Our new Race Committee Chairman, Jeff Davidson, solicited ideas from the membership to encourage better / more fun racing.  Among the ideas were:

- After-race socializing at the Grand Elk restaurant

- Modify the format of the skippers' meeting, and holding it at Grand Elk

(such as, require race participants attendance at the skippers' meeting,

pay fees at the the skippers' meeting rather than on-the-water,

provide weather information and informative strategy suggestions,

start the skippers' meeting earlier -- at 10:30am -- to allow time to cover

    additional discussion)

- Mike LaPorte suggested paying annual race fees up-front at the beginning

of the season; there was some discussion that "sometimes" racers would

object to that, since they may race only one or two races in a season.  Perhaps

offer prepayment as an option to racers who may wish to pay in advance.

- Dave Gillespie suggested playing "musical boats" this year.  This could take

the form of captains actually trading boats, or at least trading crews, and

also inviting non-racers on board as crew, and inviting other racers on board to

serve as captain while the usual captain serves as crew on their own boat.  Lots

of possibilities here to mix things up and get folks involved in racing.

Club Officers for 2005

There was group discussion, vote, and approval to ask Dave Peterson if he would be willing to serve as our Vice Commodore this year.  The rest of the slate of officers was approved unanimously.  This year's officers are:

          Commodore:           Johan Stokstad

          Vice Commodore:

          Secretary/Treasure          Terry Pratt

Auction

With Jack Bakken as our intrepid auctioneer, and with Ingrid taking names of bidders, the auction raised $188 for the club.  The event included "ghost" bids made on behalf of surprised members who didn't know they were bidding, bids that somehow only Jack heard being made, or which only he noticed someone was making with subtle hand signals (though the bidder often didn't realize he was making, such signals).  Dave Gillespie was overheard scheming to charge his kids $2 for each lasagna leftover lunch that he'd bought for $1. Thanks to all members

Who brought auction items to the meeting.
